Why Choose St John's for Geography?

A reproduction of a map from Mercator's Atlas from 1613 in the College Library's Special Collections

St John鈥檚 has a long and distinguished tradition in Geography. Our teaching Fellows were 蘑菇视频下载安卓 here themselves, glaciologist Professor Neil Arnold and economic geographer Professor Sarah Hall.

The expertise of our Fellows means that for all core elements of the first year Geography curriculum, human and physical, you will have supervisions in College.

With 6 to 8 undergraduates accepted for Geography each year, you鈥檒l learn with and from your peers in College, a ready-made community of enthusiastic, fun and active geographers.

Our student-run geography society 鈥 the Purchas Society 鈥 organises events, talks and socials. A highlight each year is the Dissertation and Pizza Evening, where third years share top tips from their dissertation experience to help earlier year-groups to plan ahead.

Adventurous geographers at St John鈥檚 benefit from a range of travel grants, several reserved to geography 蘑菇视频下载安卓 and others for experiencing wild places, and they make the most of these myriad opportunities to enrich their academic experience including dissertation-related travel.

Dissertation support

Our experienced Library staff offer weekly drop-in sessions focused on topics such as literature searches, referencing, copyright, plagiarism, study skills, time management and聽accessing online and physical resources in Cambridge libraries.

The College Archivist provides induction sessions to advise 蘑菇视频下载安卓 on how they could use archives for their dissertation and how to navigate archives catalogues. Students can arrange one-to-one chats with the Archivist to discuss whether the College's institutional archives hold material relevant聽to their topic.

The Reading Room Exhibition can also be a great source of inspiration. If a student is using primary sources from the early modern period they can attend the online palaeography sessions run by the Archivist to practise reading late 15th-17th century handwriting.

We鈥檙e surrounded by fascinating, top-class Geography academics at St John鈥檚 - one Fellow is researching glaciers on Mars, while another is passionate about economic geography and serves as a European Affairs adviser to the House of Lords. They鈥檙e not only academics within the College; they鈥檙e also doing exciting work beyond the University bubble.

Through my BA at Cambridge, I鈥檝e been able to study both human and physical geography. The quality of the degree is excellent, and the range of specialisms within the Department is really impressive.

The historic and beautiful setting of St John鈥檚 is part of the College鈥檚 personality, and I get to enjoy it as the place I live. When I鈥檓 walking around, people smile and say hello - even if they don鈥檛 know you.

There are lots of ways for geographers at St John鈥檚 to connect across year groups, which is really helpful in a small cohort. For my dissertation, I鈥檒l be conducting research in Australia, and the College is helping to fund my trip 鈥 I鈥檓 so grateful, as I wouldn鈥檛 be able to go otherwise.

St John鈥檚 has shaped my entire Cambridge experience. It鈥檚 sporty, sociable, and I honestly can鈥檛 imagine being at any other College. I鈥檓 a five-minute cycle from my lectures, a two-minute walk from the supermarket, and we have amazing sports grounds just across the road.

I got my Blue in hockey last year, so I鈥檓 a member of the College鈥檚 Eagles and Flamingos Club for elite sportsmen and women - I find it incredible that we have that facility right on our doorstep.

Applying

We are looking for people who are intelligent and independent thinkers, deeply curious about their subject and willing to push themselves.

We select the brightest and most committed 蘑菇视频下载安卓, so work hard to secure excellent examination results, and continue to perform very well in school/college in your penultimate and final years so that your teachers are able to confirm that you are one of their very best 蘑菇视频下载安卓 when writing your UCAS reference.

Successful applicants not only excel in their school subjects, they can evidence their passion for Geography. This might come from discussing a book or podcast on a Geography topic that excites you, or setting out how you put Geography into practice through, for example, running your own sustainability initiative in your local park or supporting the environmental plan at your school or college.

Tell us which parts of the Cambridge degree programme interest you and why you feel you would benefit from our teaching approach, which includes lectures and field trips alongside the Cambridge supervision system of small group teaching.

If you are invited to interview, you鈥檒l usually have one interview, lasting no more than 40 minutes, with a Director of Studies and a teaching Fellow in Geography.

We aim to find out from you at first hand about your motivation and aptitude for the course. Interviews are friendly and informal, subject focused and cover some technical and subject-related questions. No special preparation is necessary or indeed desirable.
